STEER program was a success!
Our two-week summer STEER program finally happened (it was cancelled in 2020 and 2021 due to Covid). This program (Student-Teacher Education in Ecological Research) is designed to better train middle school teachers how to teach science as a process. Our teacher this year was Frances McVay from South Girard Junior High School in Phenix City, Alabama. Frances conducted a project on thermal behavior and physiology of beetles, and will use the tools and experience she gained from the STEER program to engage her 8th graders in science projects this coming school year.

Congratulations to Jenna Pruett, who won the Marlene Zuk Award from the Division of Animal Behavior for her oral presentation at the recent meeting of the Society for Integrative and Comparative Biology.  Well done Jenna!

December 2018

Putter has graduated – Congratulations!  He will be greatly missed, and we are eager to hear of his future successes during his Ph.D. work at the Australian National University.

October/November 2018

Congratulations to Putter on many fronts…
First, Putter successfully defended his MS thesis on nesting behavior of crested anoles in urban and forested environments. He will be graduating next month!  Second, Putter has been awarded (and has accepted) a Ph.D. fellowship to attend the Australian National University.  Putter will be starting at ANU in July to work with Scott Keogh.  Lastly, Putter made it to the finals in the three minute thesis competition where he condensed his entire MS thesis into a 3 minute presentation to a broad/general audience. Although he didn’t make it past the finals, he did an outstanding job and did the lab and the Department proud!  Well done!

Congratulations to Josh Hall
Josh was awarded a COSAM travel grant to present some of his thesis research at the 2019 meeting of the Society for Integrative and Comparative Biology in Tampa, FL.

Josh also won best student talk in the Zoology section at the 2018 meeting of the Tennessee Academy of Sciences.

September 2018

Congratulations to Josh Hall
Josh won best student talk at the 2018 meeting of the Tennessee Herpetological Society.

New graduate student
Welcome to Kaitlyn Murphy. Kaitlyn recently completed her B.S. degree at Iowa State University, where she was involved with research on various aspects of turtle reproduction and development in Fred Janzen’s lab. Kaitlyn will be co-advised by Drs. Mendonca and Warner, and she will likely undertake research on some aspect of reptile reproductive and developmental biology.

Successful REU experience
Congratulations to Andrew DeSana from Seton Hill University for successfully completing his REU project this summer. Andrew conducted a field enclosure experiment that examined anole egg depredation by marsh crabs. His results suggest that crabs are potentially important predators of anole eggs, and that eggs laid under leaf litter are well protected from crab depredation (as opposed to eggs in open habitat or under fallen palm fronds).

May 2018

Warner lab receives NSF funds! (April 2014)

We have recently received funds from the National Science Foundation to study how adaptation to urban environments might prepare organisms for invasion to areas outside of their native range. In collaboration with Drs. Jason Kolbe (University of Rhode Island) and Liam Revell (University of Massachusetts at Boston), this work will explore adaptation across all life stages (from embryos to adults) in the Puerto Rican crested anole (Anoles cristatellus) in Miami and San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Grant from American Philosophical Society received (April 2014)

These funds will be used
to initiate a new study of nutritional ecology and maternal effects in brown anoles (Anolis sagrei).

Congratulations to David Delaney (April 2014)

David
received a grant-in-aid from Sigma Xi for his upcoming research on interactions between adult and juvenile brown anoles.

Congrats to David Delaney! (April 2014)

As of April 2013, the renovations to the Warner Lab are now complete!  Our first lab-based lizard experiment at UAB is underway.

NSF funding received (Jan. 2013)

We have recently received funding from the National Science Foundation to examine geographic variation in temperature-dependent sex determination (TSD) in painted turtles. This research will assess how TSD is locally adapted to several climatically different sites around the United States, and will provide insights into how painted turtle might respond to predicted changes in climate. Participants in the project include: Fred Janzen (PI, Iowa State University), Dan Warner (Co-PI, University of Alabama at Birmingham), John Iverson (Co-PI, Earlham college), Gene Takle (Co-PI, Iowa State University), Carrie Milne-Zelman (Co-PI, Aurora College), and several collaborators (Mike Kearney, University of Melbourne; Arthur Georges, University of Canberra; Liz Addis, Gonzaga University).
